Taylor Swift Reclaims Full Ownership of Her First Six Albums in Landmark $360M Deal

Taylor Swift has officially regained ownership of the master recordings for her first six studio albums, marking a triumphant conclusion to a years-long battle over her early music catalog.

On May 30th, 2025, Taylor Swift announced the news on her website, revealing that she had purchased the masters from Shamrock Capital, the private equity firm that acquired them from Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in 2020. The deal, reportedly valued at approximately $360 million, grants Swift complete control over her albums, associated music videos, concert films, and unreleased material.

In a heartfelt message to fans, Swift wrote, “A flashback sequence of all the times I daydreamed about, wished for, and pined away for a chance to get to tell you this news… All of the music I’ve ever made… now belongs… to me.”

Taylor Swift’s journey to reclaim her masters began in 2019 when Braun acquired Big Machine Records, including the rights to her early catalog. Feeling blindsided by the sale, Swift embarked on a mission to regain control, leading to the re-recording of her first six albums under the Taylor’s Version moniker. These re-recordings not only allowed her to own new masters but also resonated deeply with fans, who supported her endeavor wholeheartedly.

The acquisition has been met with widespread support from fans and fellow artists alike. Legendary singer-songwriter Carole King praised Swift, stating, “You continue to inspire!”

To celebrate the milestone, Swift was spotted enjoying a dinner outing in New York City with close friend Selena Gomez. The two dined at the historic Monkey Bar, which closed early for the private event. Gomez later shared her pride on social media, writing, “Yes you did that Tay. So proud!”

With full ownership of her early work, Swift now holds complete creative and financial control over her entire music catalog, a rare achievement in the music industry. This victory not only solidifies her legacy but also sets a precedent for artists advocating for ownership of their creations.

As Taylor Swift continues her illustrious career, fans eagerly anticipate what this newfound autonomy will bring, both in terms of future projects and the potential release of previously unheard material from her vault.
