British rapper Stormzy has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Cambridge, recognising his outstanding contribution to music and his tireless efforts to support Black students in higher education.
The chart-topping artiste, born Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., accepted the honour while reflecting on the impact of the STORMZY SCHOLARSHIP, which he launched in 2018 to fund the tuition and living costs of Black students at the prestigious university.
Stormzy described the moment as “deeply humbling,” noting that the accolade represents more than personal recognition, it’s a testament to the power of access and representation.
Through his scholarship programme, dozens of students have been able to attend Cambridge without the financial barriers that often deter minority applicants. The artiste said he was “very proud” of the 56 students he has helped financially to study at the Cambridge University.
When he launched the project, Stomzy said “it’s so important for black students, especially, to be aware that it can 100% be an option ti attend a university of this caliber.
The University of Cambridge praised Stormzy for his cultural influence and for using his platform to challenge inequality in the UK’s education system. His recognition comes as the institution continues its push to diversify its student body.
The rapper was among eight public figures to receive the honorary.
Since its launch, the Stormzy Scholarship has helped open doors for talented Black students, sparking a wider conversation about inclusion in Britain’s elite universities.
